Health Issues Unique to Mattapan and Hyde Park

Since 1997, Mattapan Community Health Center along with its partners and friends have made significant improvements in many of the health indicators in Mattapan and Hyde Park, particularly infant mortality and breast cancer mortality rates. What follows are summaries of the major health issues in those two neighborhoods.

Summary of Major Health Issues:  Mattapan
Prenatal Care and Care in the First Trimester: In 2003, 75.3% of Mattapan births were to women who received prenatal care in the first trimester. This is a 4.7% decrease from 2002.

Adequate Prenatal Care: In 2003, 72.1% of Mattapan births were to women who received adequate prenatal care. This is a 4.0% increase from 2002.

Low Birthweight Babies: In 2003, 13.0% of infants born to Mattapan women were of low birthweight - unchanged from 2002.

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): In 2003, the IMR for Mattapan was 11.4 infant deaths per 1,000 live births. This is a 2.7% increase from the period 1998-2002.

Asthma Hospitalization: During 1999-2003, the asthma hospitalization rate for Mattapan was 9.9 per 100,000, unchanged from previous period. It is the 5th highest rate of 15 Boston neighborhoods.

Elevated Blood Lead Levels: In 2004, the percent of Mattapan children with elevated blood levels decreased 31.7% from 2003. Mattapan has the 3rd highest percent of elevated blood levels of 15 Boston neighborhoods.

Teen Births: In 2003, Mattapan had a birth rate 22.2 per 1,000 births for ages 15-17 is similar to Boston overall.

All Cancer Mortality: In 2003, the cancer mortality rate for Mattapan (195.4 per 100,000) was 1.4% lower than the Boston rate. Deaths for all cancers decreased, making it the second leading cause of death.

Breast Cancer Mortality: During 2002-2003, the breast cancer mortality age-adjusted rate was 31.6 deaths per 100,000 women, making it 8.4% lower than the Boston rate.

Heart Disease Mortality: In 2003, the Mattapan heart disease mortality rate (195.4 per 100,000) was 1.4% lower than the Boston rate. In 2003, death from heart disease increased, making it the leading cause of death compared to years 1999 through 2002, when cancer was the leading cause of death.

HIV/AIDS Incidence Rate: In 2003, Mattapan's HIV/AIDS incidence rate was 86.2 new cases per 100,000. This is almost double the Boston rate.

Prostate Cancer Mortality: The prostate cancer mortality rate for Mattapan for 2002-2003 was three times higher than the overall Boston rate for prostate cancer mortality.

Diabetes Mortality: During 2002-2003, the diabetes mortality age-adjusted rate for Mattapan (45.8 deaths per 100,000) was 1.7 times the overall Boston rate for diabetes mortality.

Incidence Rate of Sexually Transmitted Disease: The incidence rate of STDs among Mattapan residents continues to be substantially higher than most Boston neighborhoods. The 2003 rate for Mattapan (1,810.0 new cases per 100,000) is more than double the Boston rate.

Summary of Major Health Issues:  Hyde Park
Prenatal Care in the First Trimester: In 2003, the percentage of births to Hyde Park women who received prenatal care in the first trimester was 81.7%. This is 1.2% lower than for Boston overall.

Adequate Prenatal Care: In Hyde Park, 81% of women who gave birth in 2002 received adequate prenatal care, similar to the previous reporting period. Hyde Park's rate is 7% higher than Boston.

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): Between 1999-2003 the Hyde Park IMR rose 17.6% and the 1999-2003 Hyde Park IMR is 26.2% higher than the corresponding Boston rate.

Asthma Hospitalization: During 1999-2003, Hyde Park had one of the lower asthma hospitalization rates (8.1 hospitalizations per 1,000) among Boston's neighborhoods. The rate for Hyde Park was 10.0% lower than the rate for Boston.

Elevated Blood Lead Levels: In 2004, Hyde Park children (2.6%) had elevated blood lead levels similar to the overall Boston average (2.7%).

Breast Cancer Mortality: During 2002-2003, the Hyde Park breast cancer mortality age-adjusted rate (44.6 deaths per 100,000) was 29.3% higher than the Boston rate for breast cancer.

Diabetes Mortality: During 2002-2003, the Hyde Park diabetes mortality age-adjusted rate (28.4 deaths per 100,000) was 8.0% higher than the Boston rate.

Incidence Rate of Sexually Transmitted Disease: In 2003, the incidence rate of sexually transmitted disease for Hyde Park (546.2 new cases per 100,000) is 32.9% lower than the Boston rate.

Cancer Mortality: In 2003, the cancer mortality age-adjusted rate for Hyde Park (248.3 deaths per 100,000) was one of the highest of Boston neighborhoods. It was 17% higher than the Boston rate.

Prostate Cancer Mortality: During 2002-2003, the prostate cancer mortality age-adjusted rate (21.0 deaths per 100,000) for Hyde Park was 23.6% lower than the Boston rate.

Heart Disease Mortality: In 2003, the Hyde Park heart disease mortality age-adjusted rate (176.8 deaths per 100,000) is 10.8% less than the Boston rate.
